Etiquette pointers for business meetings
As a CEO in the United Kingdom, I've been asked questions about business etiquette for many years. Here are the top five offensive behaviors I tell people to avoid when they're in meetings, basic things you are not supposed to do.
1. DON'T be late. Make sure you arrive a few minutes early and wait. An Indian friend of mine arrived 10 minutes late to a meeting and was fired from the job. Business meetings are not like casual parties, where you should arrive a little late.
2. DON'T sit too close to people. Some people stand so close that I can smell what they had for breakfast. You're expected to leave at least two feet between you and the person you're speaking with.
3. DON'T cross your arms across your chest, unless you're a king or queen. People might think you're angry or bored.
4. DON'T ask personal questions. If you ask questions that are considered rude – 'How much money do you make?' 'How old are you?' 'Are you married?' – you might not get an honest answer.
5. DON'T move too quickly on business decisions. I worked with an American salesperson who wanted to make decisions immediately. He became very annoyed – and annoying!
