Talking about You will what you want - Live your dream!
Let me tell you today the true and amazing story of an incredible woman, a marvellous ballet dancer, an ultimate fighter, and a hard-working pursuer of her dreams who has become a role model for many people.
Someone who believed to deserve better. Someone who has never given up. Someone of true talent and relentless determination.Someone who chose her own path, who set her own standards, and who shaped her own destiny by not allowing others defining her.
This remarkable person is Misty Copeland who became only the second black soloist in the history of the most prestigious American Ballet Theatre by the age of 24. What makes it even more impressive is the fact that Misty comes from a family who saw three marriages fail, had to move through the country as a very young child, and with her three older siblings often experienced situations when the family almost run ouf of money and food. Misty did not begin dancing until she was 13. This is many years after those who become professionals usually get their start. Although already some months afterwards her exceptional talent and immense will became obvious, her perceived body physics - bigger feet, very muscular legs, larger breasts - kept her out of many prestigious dance programs.
And still Misty did not give up. Indeed, the contrary was true. As a girl who fell in love with ballet, an art and sports that has traditionally included very few people of color, she was convinced of having to dance as a ballerina. Misty, now 31, has not only become a famous ballerina, but also served as a judge on the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance,“ wrote a popular memoir at the beginning of this year, and currently is performing in a beautiful ad for the sports apparel company Under Armour as part of their "I Will What I Want“ campaign.
A campaign which portrays people who had struggles but persevered while not conforming to the typical mold. In the Under Armour spot, Misty is warming up, while the voice of a young girl reads real rejection letters that Misty received. And yet we see her flying through the air and spinning across the stage in elegant determination and with inspiring grace. At the end of the spot the viewer understands the payoffs by reading that Misty indeed is a soloist of the American Ballet Theatre.
The Beautifully Gracious Misty CopelandKudos to Misty for having sticked to her dreams and having turned into a remarkable and modest role model. Well done Under Armour for not having aired this time a campaign with sweaty football players, but an elegant and emotional TV spot (and yes, we understand that there also is a commercial background to it). It´s an inspiration for many of us to vigorosly insist on living our dreams and not accepting any limitations and obstacles.
That´s what makes the world spinning around!Which persons are your role models? How could you become a role model yourself? Please share your thoughts with us. Thanks.
